Cyanocobalamin is a man-made form of vitamin B12 used to prevent and treat low blood levels of this vitamin. It is used to treat and prevent vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia, which occurs when there are low levels of vitamin B12 in the body. Cyanocobalamin works by increasing the levels of vitamin B12 in the body, which is necessary for making red blood cells and keeping the nervous system healthy. Cyanocobalamin is available in different forms, including tablets, capsules, mouth sprays, drops, and injections. It is usually taken orally every day to prevent vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia. Cyanocobalamin injections are given to people who cannot absorb vitamin B12 through the intestine, such as those with pernicious anemia, food absorption problems, stomach/intestinal surgery, stomach/intestinal disease, or irradiation of the small bowel. Cyanocobalamin injections are given by a healthcare provider in an office or clinic and are usually given once a day for the first 6-7 days of treatment, followed by every other day for 2 weeks, and then every 3-4 days for 2-3 weeks. Cyanocobalamin is safe to use during pregnancy when taken in recommended doses.
