The Himalayas are a mountain range in Asia that form a natural barrier separating the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau. They stretch about 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) from west to east, crossing territories of six countries: Nepal, India, China (Tibet), Bhutan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The range borders the Tibetan Plateau in the north and the Indo- Gangetic Plain in the south. The western end starts in Pakistan near the Indus River, extending eastward through northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, and ends near eastern Tibet in China. The Himalayas include some of Earth's highest peaks, such as Mount Everest, which lies on the border between Nepal and Tibet in China.
