The Hobbit was written by J.R.R. Tolkien primarily while he was living in England. Tolkien, though born in South Africa, moved to England at the age of four and was inspired by the English countryside, particularly areas around Birmingham including the village of Sarehole. This rural environment inspired the fictional Shire, the home of the hobbits in The Hobbit. Tolkien began composing the story formally between 1926 and 1930, and it grew out of bedtime stories he told his children. He was also an Oxford University professor during the time he wrote the book.
