The Overlook Hotel itself is a fictional location inspired by the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which inspired Stephen King's novel, but the film did not shoot at the Stanley Hotel. The maze seen in the movie was a set constructed specifically for the film. These filming locations allowed Stanley Kubrick to create the distinct, disorienting atmosphere of the Overlook Hotel by combining various real-world sites and studio sets.
