The Shining was filmed at several locations:
- The exterior shots of the Overlook Hotel were filmed at the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon.
- The interior scenes were shot at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England, where the hotel interiors were constructed.
- The opening aerial shots of the road leading to the hotel were filmed at Going-to-the-Sun Road and Glacier National Park in Montana.
- The Torrance family’s apartment exterior scenes were filmed at the Kensington Apartments in Boulder, Colorado.
- Additional minor locations include Stansted Airport in Essex, and some isolated shots at places like Wild Goose Island in Montana.
The Overlook Hotel itself is a fictional location inspired by the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which inspired Stephen King's novel, but the film did not shoot at the Stanley Hotel. The maze seen in the movie was a set constructed specifically for the film. These filming locations allowed Stanley Kubrick to create the distinct, disorienting atmosphere of the Overlook Hotel by combining various real-world sites and studio sets.
