The current Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) is Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He was first elected by WHO Member States at the Seventieth World Health Assembly in May 2017 and took office on July 1, 2017. He is the first person from the WHO African Region to hold this position and was re-appointed for a second term in May 2022
. Dr. Tedros is an Ethiopian public health official with a background in biology, immunology, and community health. Before becoming WHO Director- General, he served as Ethiopia's Minister of Health (2005–2012) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (2012–2016). He has also held leadership roles in global health initiatives such as Chair of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, and Chair of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership
. As WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros leads the organization’s Secretariat and serves as the principal advisor to the United Nations on global health matters. His priorities include universal health coverage, health emergencies, women’s and children’s health, climate and environmental health impacts, and organizational transformation
