Potassium was discovered in 1807 by the English chemist Sir Humphry Davy. He isolated the element by electrolyzing molten potassium hydroxide (caustic potash), making potassium the first metal to be isolated through electrolysis. The name "potassium" comes from "potash," the term for the alkali extracted from wood ashes, and its chemical symbol K is derived from "kalium," the name used in Germany and Scandinavia.
