A copywriter is a professional writer who creates written content for the purpose of advertising or other forms of marketing. The written content, called copy or sales copy, aims to increase brand awareness and ultimately persuade a person or group to take a particular action. Copywriters help to create a variety of marketing materials, including billboards, brochures, catalogs, jingle lyrics, magazine and newspaper advertisements, sales letters and other direct mail, scripts for television or radio commercials, taglines, white papers, website and social media posts, and other marketing communications. They align all of their work with the target audiences expectations while keeping the content and copy fresh, relevant, and effective.
Copywriters can be employed in marketing departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms, copywriting agencies, or can be self-employed as freelancers, where clients range from small to large companies. Some copywriters work as independent contractors or freelancers, writing for multiple clients.
The job responsibilities of a copywriter can include brainstorming and creating concepts for advertisements and marketing campaigns, often working in partnership with a graphic designer, writing copy for various formats and media, researching to find information, statistics, keywords, topics, and trends, and editing and proofreading copy to ensure accuracy and consistency.
It is important to note that a copywriter is not the same as a content writer. While content writers write longer form educational and informative content with the goal of creating awareness, engagement, and preference for the brand over time, copywriters generally write shorter advertising copy that is designed to prompt immediate action.
